Hemkens

This review by Hemkens describes using colchicine, an anti-gout medication, for the prevention of future cardiovascular events. The authors found that colchicine was able to stabilize the atherosclerotic plaques that lead to myocardial infarctions. There was a significant reduction in MI occurance, but they did not find a significant difference in mortality in these patients. Thus, there does not seem to be a large benefit at this time for colchicine therapy, as it also may result in unpleasant gastrointestinal side effects.
