Rotation # 7 – Site Eval Reflectio

My site evaluations were conducted with Amil Alie, my professor from our psychiatry course and someone I worked with at my very first rotation. Amil previously had experience in emergency medicine and asked me and my fellow student very pointed questions about our patient H&Ps. I chose to present a patient that needed evaluation for a continuously bleeding wound and bruising over both arms and legs. Through questioning, I found out she had been accidentally taking double the dose of her anti-coagulation medication she received after having a thrombectomy, leading to improper clotting. Our professor assured us that accidental medication over-ingestion is a common problem we’ll have to face in medicine, and that we have to make sure the patient is well-informed about anything that they’re taking. I also talked about several common medications including the first generation cephalospirin Cephalexin, which is commonly used to treat skin and soft tissue infections like cellulitis. I also used it to treat a patient complaining of a UTI and who previously had used Macrobid to treat a UTI less than 3 months prior.
