For this rotation I worked with my OBGYN professor, Carlos Melendez. We saw some ED consults together where I reviewed the different causes of first trimester vaginal bleeding, as well as performed pap smears and transvaginal ultrasounds. The patient I presented for my site eval was a young primigravid patient who was experiencing severe hyperemesis gravidarum and developed hypokalemia as a result. We discussed EKG changes and interpreted lab results and imaging findings. We also discussed various antibiotics, hypertension, and tocolytic medications that are safe to use during pregnancy, such as hydralazine, nifedipine, metronidazole, and indomethacin. I enjoyed working together and learned a great deal about women’s health.
